This is both sad and disgusting to read. I grew up and lived in California for 45 years until I left New Years’s Day 1995. UCLA is part of the State university system and has been known to be very liberal thinking; and Stanford is private and highly respected. That both of these schools would allow professors to publish false information is disgraceful! Having opposing views is what college is about but not misinformation, in this case false information, that took Invictus - a fighter for truth and transparency to point out and be known! This false information so greatly affects other states where not only is minimum wage below $10 p/h but also no benefits at all included in addition to staying on the job lacks advancement, cost of living increases, and still no benefits.
Great reporting! There is so much agenda driven information being fed to the public that you really have to do your homework to tell if you can believe any of it. I am down to Drop Site and a few independent journalists that I find trustworthy at all. Thanks for the integrity.
As a former journalist, I've watched the decline of news media and this article by Drop Site -- as well as reporting by some other Substack and other outlets -- gives me hope for a restoration of good reporting.
The Hoover/WSJ/Bloomberg reporting is a classic example of what happens when ideology trumps reporting the truth. Far too many conservatives -- and liberal/lefty media like the NYT, WaPo, et al -- start with a conclusion and try to find evidence to support it. Good journalism involves the opposite -- letting your research lead you to a conclusion.
So kudos to you -- and to the mysterious "Invictus" for revealing the truth. Can we have more of this, please?!!!
The article notes that California’s fast food workforce grew by 31.5% while establishments increased by 40.8%, but it overlooks the implications of this gap. More establishments don’t necessarily equate to better opportunities, especially if these businesses are smaller or more labor efficient, requiring fewer workers. Fast food workers are also averaging fewer hours, which decreases the potential benefits of job growth and higher wages. It’s not just about how many jobs exist, but whether those jobs provide enough hours and stability for workers to thrive. The numbers might look good on the surface, but they don’t tell the whole story.
Good point (though not the one the author was actually making). Work overall has undergone the same transformation: fewer bodies working fewer hours more efficiently, which benefits the employer. Of course, lower end jobs have always had a lack of benefits and every job has seen an increase in demand for multi-tasking (hey look, now you can be both the fryer/shake gal AND work the cash register!).
It all leads to one conclusion: work sucks and low wage work sucks harder.
Drop Site News should be hired by MediaBias Fact Check. The latter lists the Hoover Institute as never having failed a fact check. It's MediaBias Fact Check that failed on this fact check.
This corruption in every layer of government, corporations, "think tanks" reporting is so off the scale that it's laughable if it wasn't damaging real people, public trust and ethics in the USA, not just California. shameful, Contemptible.
No discussion of inflationary pressure on the economy. I'm all for low wage earners having enough money to live. The inflation inducing potential of rising wages has been routinely debunked, but more people buying more things does seem like it would raise prices, with overconsumption fueling global warming.

Nice to see Jessica Burbank writing for DropSite. It’s important to feature economists with an MMT lens on public policy issues.

Hard to believe Condoleezza Rice would lie about anything. Must have been an underling.
