Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. Sums up the history. Exploitation seems always our game in Latin America. Strange how Nixon could normalize trade and relations with China generations ago but Cuba is still cudgeled because of the Florida vote. I’m nearly an Octogenarian and never had a Che shirt, but maybe I will get one! Motorcycle Diaries! Oscar Romero. Salvador Allende. Liberation Theology!

I have mixed feelings about Nixon's and Kissinger's trips to China. I was never in favor of America's hostile stance toward that country, but in the long term, the outcomes of that 1970's "normalisation" have not been good for us, i.e. the subsequent offshoring of most of or vital industries, which made us all the more vulnerable.

I sense that "normalising" relations with China was only a first step in the engineering of a vast transfer of wealth and power into the hands of a tiny super-rich global elite.

I doubt that it was even Nixon's idea in the first place.

The part I will never understand is why so many American members of Congress are filled with so much hate.

It's not hate, it's greed. They answer to their donors. When the donor says "I hate so-and-so", the politicians all scramble to shout "ME TOO!" the loudest.

They live in Richistan, and they like it there.

What they hate is the prospect of losing their jobs and all the percs that come with.

By now, it's common knowledge that JFK and his brother RFK were assassinated partly because they evolved to valuing peace. JFK using back channels agreed not to invade Cuba and remove our missiles from Turkey in exchange for Castro's not fomenting Communism other Latin American countries. Before Castro, Cuba was a whorehouse literally and figuratively for the Mafia and other unsavory interests. Read: JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He died and Why It Matters by James Douglass.

It shows just how demented Biden and the Dems are thinking that Florida would ever be in play in a presidential election again. (Amazing that Florida voted for Obama, but he was a flash in the pan and had everybody fooled, apparently, even the Nobel Prize Committee.) Of course, Biden is the man who thinks South Carolina is the first-in-the-nation bellwether for the Democratic Party. Haha.

Fantastic, you deserve those subscriptions. Excellent closing line and paragraph. The last dark-Biden-Trump eight years have been engineered to benefit the weapons industrial congressional complex- they just gifted themselves another $450B from the public kitty in corruption through the $895B NDAA- by leaving people only with hopelessness, the opposite of the Obama years. The new world disorder of the Bush butchers of Baghdad is gangster-rubble for cheap labor and resources to parlay Halliburton BP and Exxon back into the DOW for insider traders like Pelosi. Most people are in Nixon‘s silent majority camp; they don’t fight and rather than suffer the oppression of occupation and collective punishment, they migrate, into the xenophobic heart of the wealth empire, turning it right and into panopticon.

I'm suspecting that 2024 may prove to be the last year that American citizens enjoyed access to a high quality information system and First Amendment rights. Meta appears to want both gone and has been "disappearing" the people and accounts of those of us who dared to share Drop Site News reports. Drop Site News itself may be the next casualty to oligarchs and plutocrats.

Thanks for covering this Ryan. So important and underreported on. Belly of the Beast is who I follow for this. Curious how/where to mobilize folks to pressure Biden to make an order on this

There is so much money laying on the table for trump in Cuba. I find it hard to believe that he doesn’t tell little Marco to knock it off and normalize relationships with Cuba

That was my thought too—Trump would take it right back to Batista days, and add an extra sleaze factor—but maybe people would have enough to eat?

Fantastic, clear journalism. I just subscribed to DS. I knew Biden had chosen not to normalize with Cuba, but really didn’t understand the recent history. Wish MSM would help us understand basic geopolitics like this—crazy we have become so uninformed.
