Sachs' essay brings together a lot of pieces of the puzzle associated with US behavior toward Russia and other countries like China. It confirms what I have long suspected: the US will only be satisfied when it achieves complete world dominance. Sadly, this is an extremely pernicious goal that may well lead to a catastrophic, and final, nuclear war that destroys the US and most of humanity.

That piece is realization expanding. I have been struggling to understand my own country. The USA. I’m coming up on my seventh decade and the veil is being lifted. The US has not been a benign force globally. We’re presented with good guys and bad guys and some are coming to the consensus that US policy is and has been a malevolent force worldwide. And yet, who are we being presented at the DNC? Clintons. Henry Kissinger being presented as a heroic Secretary of State at his death. I remember the joy when perestroika happened. The cold war over. Can’t have that.

I really appreciate Jeffery Sachs these days especially after the while covid debacle.

That arrogant foreign policy doesn't even work to the US's advantage. Curses on those financial and military gangsters who have brought all of us to this dangerous place, and thank you Professor Sachs for your wisdom, tireless efforts and above all your sanity.

Thank you for this post. I’ve had a hard time understanding U.S foreign policy over many years now. To think that a cadre of neocons would want to dominate the world seems more of a reality today than it ever was.

And people, especially who, when it suits, purport to be on the left, have become neocons, though no doubt they would deny it. But you can't have it both ways. Imagine being a "progressive" when maniacs like Nuland's running your party of government's "foreign policy".

Thank you for this illuminating, wonderfully written article, that all cannot fail to understand. Thank you Jeffrey Sachs for your perseverance then and now, Keynes would be proud! The truth is there are so many who speak out for social justice, for ceasefire, for peace, yet the dominant narrative is one of business as usual, war as usual, and forget about allowing a Palestinian American woman to speak at the DNC, that would be against foreign policy.

again, again and again, i am reminded of reagan-appointed CIA director william casey's words:

"we'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the american public believes is false." when i think back to how popular gorbachov was in my EU country and to how disgracefully this visionary of peace from lisbon to vladivostok was let down while we europeans did not come to russia's rescue bc we - still under US neoCONs' influence - are forever supposed to believe: only we, never they, defend the best way of life - as we continue to bring death to so many people on earth ...

because "peace," as all warmongers say, "does not pay!"

thank you again, prof. sachs, for reminding us of historic facts we are supposed to disregard and discard.

This rabbit hole goes deeper. I'm loathe to reference a documentary, as they are necessarily limited in detail, but you can get up to speed on how a group of elites attempted a financial takeover of Russia during this period. I'm referring to "The Forecaster" ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4103404/ ). Martin Armstrong was invited into this group to take part in the financial feast on Russia's carcass, but declined to join in the manipulation. This put a target on his back which ultimately led to trumped-up charges and years in jail under bizarre circumstances.

It's likely this was all going on without Jeffrey Sachs' knowledge.

The Forecaster was banned in most of the USA, which should pique the interest of anyone who understand how the world works these days.

This is one of many great essays by Jeffrey Sachs. For more, see https://www.jeffsachs.org/ Of particular interest is “Achieving Peace in the New Multipolar Age,” published a month ago.

I was disappointed that Jeffry Sachs was given such an uncritical platform on Counter Points. I thought more intense questioning from Taibbi and Grimm was warranted. I think he has a reputation for being self-serving although he has been supported by right wingers. On Counter Points he said that he got the Bolivian debt erased. In this really true? Here is what Wikipedia says, "Sachs's suggestion for reducing inflation was to apply fiscal and monetary discipline[clarification needed] and end economic regulation that protected the elites[clarification needed] and blocked the free market[clarification needed]. Hyperinflation reduced within weeks of the Bolivian government instituting his suggestions and the government settled its $3.3 billion debt to international lenders for about 11 cents on the dollar. At the time, this was about 85% of Bolivia's GDP.[30][31]"

85 percent of Bolivia's GDP is a lot and did not bode well for the country. Is Wikipedia wrong? Did Sachs lie?

Jeffrey Sachs is one of Judge Napolitano's regulars I always try to make time to watch, his logic and analyses are typically impeccable.

For military strategists, at least, the Cold War did not end when the Soviet Union collapsed. Doomsday machines, planet Earth self-destructs, still exist.

:(

I've a suggestion, dismantle empire.
