The Democrats neoliberal policies are okay with foreign atrocities as long as global commerce isn't interrupted. Their cynical deal with devil is playing out all over the world. Republicans are worse but the difference is one of degrees. Both parties are at the mercy of big money in politics. This journalism is critical in helping us understand capitalism's looming death spiral.

Exactly, well said.

Really disturbing. And listening to the recording of the phone call makes it more visceral and more threatening . Repression is alive and is growing stronger. Thanks to all those that continue to do the work that is needed to push back. Thank god that Julian Assange is finally free.

Another authoritarian regime being supported and propped up by the US government. All this was expected from the previous Trump administration. But to have even more repressive actions being carried out under the Biden administration was something most American citizens did not see coming. The Dark Brandon moniker has turned out to be no joke. The DNC messaging was that democracy is on the line. Is it not already a mirage?

Almost 250 million people in nuclear armed Pakistan and it's being run like a banana republic because mothership banana republic wants it that way. Another example of empire meddling that will create even more blowback, easily forseen. Talk about epic blind spots. Who's actually running empire's foreign policy shitshow, anyway? Enquiring minds...

State takes ANY questions about anything "very seriously."

Using the power of state institutions - the militaries, the intelligence services, Universities - to control individual citizens is what threatens us now under the umbrella of Empire and a few elite powerbrokers. Like the Empire, it's global. The only solution is for the individual citizens to resist by all means because, it's obvious, many governments won't.

And is my memory correct that the U.S. intervened with the Pakistani military to get Imran Khan off the ballot?

I recall reading that the West approached him for support for Ukraine, and he replied that he would keep Pakistan neutral. Then he was in jail.

What a surprise, the Biden administration collaborating with a military regime that murders, disappears and threatens dissidents, and actually wanted Khan to be locked up or worse. The neocon Biden administration has done a great job of making even more of the world hate the USA, wrecking everything and everyone wherever it "spreads democracy".

It doesn’t matter what the administration is. The State Department and CIA dictate the rules.

This reminds me of the time when Duvalier still ruled in Haiti. I was just getting to know the community here (New York) and have remained deeply involved in it since. Studies were done to determine the why of the Haitian community's relative lack of organizing against the regime. Fear for family in Haiti was the strongest reason. Transnational repression has a history, but I would bet it's stronger now, given advances in communications technology. Thank you for this very significant investigative reporting.

The arrogance of these third world countries is appalling. The world wide surge in totalitarianism can be blamed on racism. The actors are of many different backgrounds. Thugs like Trump have come out of the woodwork since Obama was elected president. The audacity of non whites to believe in democracy! The only thing we must do is expose these atrocities. Common people are beginning to take power around the world. This effect has the authoritarians on the attack. They know they are in their final throes! Thanks to Drop Site in this reporting! Keep up your inspiring work!

I'm not surprised that the fascist Pakistani military regime will do anything to maintain the status quo. Imran Khan will be victorious, InshaAllah.

What a lot of people don't know is that government support for silencing critics of military regimes such as this comes from the banks (here and in our allied countries) and their capitalist facilitators who arm these regimes and destabilize governments for their own financial benefit. Did you ever wonder where poor civilian rebels suddenly turn up armed to the teeth, led by men who seem to know how to operate all this weaponry and lead a war? Who's paying poor civilians more money than they've ever seen to be a part of a killing machine? Who's feeding these "regiments"? Banks. Banks bankroll wars and military regimes.

There is whole legal industry most people never heard of that does nothing but sue banks for their roles in backing regimes such as the Pakistani military. (Amal Clooney is the friendly face of this type of lawyer--speaking of, ever wonder how a law firm suing for "civil rights" could make any money?). French banks were sued for their roles in the horrific Rwandan civil war--yeah, $1000 suits sitting in towers in Paris were behind that nightmare--and they paid. The lawyers sashayed off with a cool billion. But the price is their lips are sealed. This ensures that it can go on.

Congress people who view their job as go'fers for their wealthiest donors are complicit in these war regimes. The U.S. military operates outside of the U.S. government but it's funded by U.S. citizens. The U.S. military is ostensibly to defend Americans; but in reality it is the private enforcement group of global capitalists who view the world as their oyster to divvy up and take by force. It's all about natural resources. The Gulf War, Vietnam--all of it--resources and strategic positioning. The modus operandi of the capitalist is, always and forever, threats and intimidation. It's the same from the lowest level to the highest: if you don't pay your electric bill, we'll cut if off (a potential death threat); eliminate those indigenous people so we can take their land, extract the resources and enrich ourselves. Kill off all the wildlife so we won't be bothered by pesky birds and endangered owls so we can take what we want.

Governments are supposed to belong to citizens. But "democracy" is a ruse to distract when capitalists in board rooms, backed by "the Pentagon" and other military structures in "global economies" have all the power. As they say, those that control the resources control. As people also say--you can have capitalism or you can have democracy but not both. The proof is available about how lawyers are cutting billion dollar deals with banks funding killing machines like Pakistan. I wish journalists would look into some of these lawsuits and expose what's behind them. Better yet, drag these men--the ones ultimately behind the Pakistani threats, not directly--out of their limousines into the light of day and let's get some names. I'd place bets that whoever is ultimately behind the threats and the regime makes their living on Wall Street.

I only just came back to watch the video after reading the article earlier. That is a terrifying situation for anyone to be in, but I’m so impressed by the steadfastness and courage from the dissenting activist. He is obviously worried about his brother and makes sure he can get released safely. However, even in the face of this he uses truth and justice, which are objectively on his side, to push back against the outright oppression. Those of us fortunate enough to be in a less repressive state should be inspired by the activist’s actions.
